It's amazing he was able to cover up this secret so long with his skate routines set to Lady Gaga, his affinity for feathers, and his ability to stand in four-inch heels. (All classic ways of pretending to be heterosexual.) All joking aside: Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir has now directly answered the question of his sexuality after being coy for years: he is gay.
Here's what Weir said to People:
In a sexual way, I'm gay, but I would marry a woman tomorrow if it struck me… With people killing themselves and being scared into the closet, I hope that even just one person can gain strength from my story.
He also addresses the reason why he waited so long to say the g-word, and it's basically because he felt like people — especially gay people — were angry with him for not coming out and that he didn't want to be a part of a community that put so much pressure on him. Which, you know, fair enough. I think high-profile gay people should come out, but as long as they're not actively working against LGBT issues — like if you're a right-wing politician or a member of a cult that claims to "cure" homosexuality — I'm not going to get into a huff. So congrats, Johnny! You've finally answered that question it was silly to keep asking.
