Patient contracts HIV from donated kidney

Well, this is just terrible. For the first time since screening procedures were standardized back in 1985, a patient in a New York City hospital has contracted HIV from a donated organ. Reportedly, the hospital followed all standard procedures for screening, but in this case the donor had unprotected sex in between being screened and actually going into surgery to donate their kidney.

"Of course this is a rare case, but we felt like we needed to alert centers to this possibility so they can talk to potential donors about risks and do testing closer to the time of surgery," said a spokesperson for the hospital, which has not been named. In light of the situation, the New York State Department of Health now recommends limiting the period in between donor testing and donation to fourteen days.
