Professor responds to “Conservative Coming Out Week” with expletive-laden email

It sure is hard out there for young Republicans, especially at the University of Iowa. So much so that the College Republicans decided to hold a "Conservative Coming Out Week". They promoted the week-long event, which featured programming that mostly ranged from the innocuous (a "Red vs. Blue" kickball game against the University Dems) to the philanthropic (a blood drive), via a campus-wide email, which featured the choice line "Conservatives in Iowa City, it is now time to come out of the closet!" However, there were also a few insensitive remarks about the Wisconsin protests and animal-rights activism thrown in for good measure.

It was probably the "closet" quote though, which likened the plight of popped-collar frat-boys to that of the LGBT community, that ticked off one University professor. Ellen Lewin, a professor of Anthropology and Gender, Women's & Sexuality Studies, sent out the following Kanye-esque response (from her University email address, no less), "FUCK YOU, REPUBLICANS," putting to rest any accusations of liberal wishy-washy-ness in the process.

After facing looming pressure from University officials, Lewin later sent out a follow-up email, expanding her views and semi-apologizing:

"I should note that several things in the original message were extremely offensive, nearly rising to the level of obscenity. Despite the Republicans’ general disdain for LGBT rights, you called your upcoming event 'conservative coming out day,' appropriating the language of the LGBT rights movement… I do apologize for my intemperate language, but the message you all sent out was extremely disturbing and offensive."

While her second message articulately conveys her specific grievances, we kind of prefer the ballsy, succinctness of the first.
