This weekend, dozens of the best chefs in the country gathered in New York for a giant, two-day-long foodie battle. The event, Le Grand Fooding 2010, pitted New York chefs against their colleagues in San Francisco, and at the end of the battle, the West Coast reigned supreme.
Both sides of the country had a pretty impressive roster. New York was represented by Momofuku's David Chang and Blue Hill's Dan Barber. San Francisco had Daniel Patterson and Melissa Perello, among others. While San Fran may ultimately have won the tastiness battle, New York triumphed when it came to having vicious, quotable taunts to fling at the enemy:
"Fuckin' every restaurant in San Francisco is just serving figs on a plate. Do something with your food." – David Chang
"Looking forward to learning how to wrap a great burrito." – Dan Barber
“When Sinatra said ‘if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere,’ he wasn’t talking about San Fran!” – Nate Appleman.
The event was attended by Aziz Ansari, Jake Gyllenhaal, and hordes of hungry and thirsty, elbowing foodies. There was also featured a battle of the bands, with Grizzly Bear pitted against SF's Dan the Automator.
