Watch: Colorful and informative video about abortion statistics

Enjoy dispelling myths about abortion? Enjoy colorful pie charts? Then you'll really enjoy this video. The Guttmacher Institute, a nonpartisan reproductive-health organization, recently compiled this three-minute long, factoid-filled clip of abortion statistics. And unlike the remarks of some Senators (cough — Jon Kyl — cough) they are intended as actual facts.

There's some interesting information presented in the video, which is no doubt intended to help contextualize the debate about such an important women's-health issue, especially when it comes to race, socioeconomic status, and religion. For instance, three out of four women who have abortions describe themselves as religiously affiliated and Catholic women have abortions at about the same rate as all other women. Additionally, four out of ten women who had abortions in 2008 lived below the federal poverty line. There's a lot to take in here, but ultimately it boils down to the vital need for access —- not only to abortion, but contraception and comprehensive sex education as well.
