Alaska’s rate of gonorrhea skyrockets

Apparently the Palins aren't the only Alaskans who are a little rusty at the whole "safer sex" thing — reported cases of gonorrhea in the state have skyrocketed in recent years, jumping an apt 69% since 2008. In spite of increased state efforts to curb the outbreak, Alaska now has the dubious distinction of having the ninth highest rate of the disease in the nation, as well as the second highest rate of chlamydia.

Against all odds, however, officials remain upbeat: "Hopefully, the high numbers now are more of a success story in that people are coming in and getting tested," said the state's HIV/STD program manger. "Though I am surprised the numbers haven't declined." Yikes. Sounds like a Very Special Episode of Sarah Palin's Alaska is in order?
