Yesterday, twenty-five-year-old Greg Hill of Cincinnati proposed to his real-life girlfriend through the online-shopping site Groupon.com. Instead of paying for a banner advertisement on the site, as was his initial plan, he got Groupon to create a deal that his girlfriend could "buy" with a single click. It's a sinister metaphor for marriage if there ever was one, although apparently, it worked.
Groupon.com, for the uninitiated, is a site which negotiates local deals based on the number of people who agree to buy a deal at its discounted price. It isn't necessarily the first place you might turn to find a marriage proposal — especially considering that multiple customers need to opt-in before it becomes active (Mormon eHarmony, anyone?) — but if you're into public declarations of love, Groupon's thirty-five million subscribers ought to provide more than enough rooftops to shout across.
