Man wearing mask and wig spied on women in public bathrooms

Here's your paraphilia story of the day: twenty-two-year-old Joel Hardman, a postgraduate student at the University of Birmingham in England, is going to have a hard time living this one down. Hardman apparently derives sexual gratification from listening to women use the toilet, so he concocted the ruse of donning a creepy, gender-ambiguous rubber mask and black wig, and snuck into female bathrooms at the University, where he would clandestinely make audio recordings.

Then Hardman got greedy, and moved on to the Bullring shopping centre in Birmingham, where millions of visitors shop each year, because it was "busier." Hardman was finally busted on April 3, after a female shopper informed a mall cop that she had noticed someone resembling a "mannequin" in the loo. (And it definitely wasn't Kim Cattrall.) He was collared by security officers after jumping out of a stall and making a run for the exit. Authorities discovered that he had taken three mobile-phone pictures of women's feet in adjoining stalls which, as Dr. Phil might say, is "just sad."

Sergeant John Mawhinney, of the Birmingham Central Police station, said:

"Hardman terrified innocent women for his own gratification. Thankfully, security staff were quick to respond and detained him at the scene. It is thanks to their actions, and the vigilance of the member of the public who reported Hardman's suspicious behavior, that others were not targeted."

Hardman was ordered to register as a sex offender for five years, was given a three-year community order, which means he'll see no prison time, and must attend a treatment program for sex offenders.
