PETA has released a bizarre new PSA for veganism, featuring a woman limping around in a neck brace. What happened? Her boyfriend took up veganism, and apparently became so "good" at sex that she incurred a series of fun, sexy physical injuries. Hilarious! From the ad's narration:
"This is Jessica. She suffers from BWVAKTBOOM . Boyfriend Went Vegan, And Knocked The Bottom Out Of Me. A painful condition that occurs when boyfriends go vegan and can suddenly bring it like a tantric porn star."
Um, yes. Because all ladies want is to get railed until they need a neck brace and can barely walk or even put on pants, right? Besides the obvious offense to women (not to mention victims of actual sexual and domestic assault) here, this is also just a confusing message. If veganism actually does heighten your sexual prowess, shouldn't the ads make it look a little more fun than this? You know, maybe a couple that looks happy instead of incapacitated by this cruelty-free new lifestyle. As it stands, this "boyfriend went vegan" campaign just makes me want to run and hide in the arms of a safe, flaccid carnivore. Sorry to get sanctimonious, but then, if anyone should understand an urge towards sanctimony, it's PETA.

Misogynistic headline-grabbing stunts are PETA's bread and butter, unfortunately.
I'm vegetarian and care about animal welfare, and can't stand PETA because of their sensational, offensive, and nonsensical shit like this. If anything, it's a disservice to PETA's concerns, and causes the sane majority of people who care about such issues to be silent in fear of being conflated with the minority who are wackos.

I can't help but wonder who their target audience is. Almost all of their ads unquestioningly endorse the mainstream porn aesthetic with zero self-awareness, yet they are an extremist group, to the point that it makes the general public think they're a joke. I mean, they compare meat to the victims of cannibalistic serial killers. I guess they think (erroneously) that the further they distance "vegan" from the stereotype, the better they'll do with the public? I totally support anyone's choice to go vegan. But the only vegans I know are pragmatic, open-minded people, none of whom spend the time in front of a makeup mirror or in the plastic surgeon office Pamela Anderson does. I just don't understand their strategy...
I think the aesthetic here is an attempt to branch out into different demographics. Maybe they're hoping for the Maxim crowd to get more interested in the "life style," to the extent that eating a particular kind of sandwich can be a life style.
Their target audience are themselves. This ad is nothing more than mental masturbation. They do it to give themselves the thrill that controversy creates, all the while stroking their anemic egos.

Based on a comment above, I guess I'm part of the "Maxim Crowd". The short is pretty funny because it's similar to a genre of serious advocacy ads, but has a twist. A lot of humor is based on painful topics. Her smile at the end is meant to lighten the moment and reassure the viewer that it's OK.

I have seen some really idiotic, pathetic and stupid advertising in my life, but this rates in the all time top 10 of stupidity!! I am not going vegan watching abusive video ads that insult me and make me want to hurt someone at PETA for even coming up with this crap!!

This seriously makes me angry and is why I, as a vegetarian, refuse to stand with PETA. Like the article said, it is offensive to victims of sex crimes and presents an undesirable image instead of one that truly promotes the lifestyle. Vegetarians are better lovers, but we'd be hypocrites if that meant hurting someone we cared about.
The ad is tasteless an immature as is practically everything PETA does. But, I don't understand why some of these comments are claiming that vegans and vegetarians DO make better lovers. That's just as childish and self-congratulating as the stunts PETA pulls. Eating meat doesn't make you sluggish or bad in bed. Being unhealthy does. As does egocentrism or being out-of-touch with your own or your partner's body or any other number of reasons. You don't want to eat meat? Fine. But you're not better (or worse) lovers because of your food choices. The vegetarians I've dated have been some of the worst lovers I've ever had. But it's not their vegetarianism nor is it my omnivore boyfriends' consumption of meat that makes them good in bed. Tell PETA to fuck off all day long - they deserve it. But don't turn around and be as sensationalistic as they are by claiming that vegetarians are better lovers.

Performance in bed is correlated to how healthy a person's diet is. And not to be gross, but so is the way someone tastes. Healthy omnivores are just as good in bed as healthy vegetarians!

This advert really does take the piss, PETA has supported animal welfare for many years and to bring out videos like these on Youtube really is disgusting and I no longer support PETA as you have no Respect at all ! To bring out such crap under "Sex Sells Act" really is the Lowest of Low. I mean how does videos like these make people want to support your cause when basically you have no respect for the cause itself. This video has made me wonder if you have supported animals at all and this is very upsetting. I have been arguing on this with male self-appointed leaders of a "vegan" society who are now reduced to censoring my comments to carry on with their "argument" that there is no violence in this video and I am an angry/oversensitive feminist. A group of educated people seemingly cannot even grasp that I am not a feminist but I respect much of feminism, and that there is such a thing as an ethics of humour.

First of all, I am a Vegetarian who has been Vegan in the past (and hopefully will be again someday). Secondly, PETA apparently disapproves of humans having/owning pets, claiming that this is a form of animal slavery. Thirdly, one would think that a group that includes many feminist members would never come up with a ridiculous video such as this, where a woman is physically harmed by a man to promote a meatless message.

So what if the ad had been about animals getting hurt? Peta's message is clear,..."it's not ok to eat meat but it is ok to hurt women." Like others have said if they wanted to sell the "going vegan turns you nto a sexual stud" line, thye could have done it just as over the top with out the expense of women. Well, I thought it was an odd, interesting clip. (Though the image of the skinny, nerdy vegetarian is played out. I'm not vegan, but nearly, and have been vegetarian for decades, and every veggie I hang with is healthy and pretty strong, athletic, etc.). Actually, if you have had insanely good sex, it is not always "fun" and nice, it's transcendent, and should cause you to kind of dispense with your proper senses for awhile. And later, you don't walk up to your lover skipping and smiling, you usually have a sly, knowing smirk on your face, and want to start diving right back into it, to hell with the bruises and bite marks.
