Popular Columbia professor arrested for sexual relationship with daughter

So I guess this isn't just the province of creepy Austrian lunatics, then. Columbia political science professor David Epstein was arrested yesterday and charged with one count of third-degree incest. Police say that Epstein was involved in a three-year-long sexual relationship with his (now twenty-four-year-old) daughter. The relationship ended last year, but apparently authorities were only tipped off about it now.

Maybe it has something to do with his recent separation from another Columbia professor? The Columbia Spectator reports that Epstein is no longer married, according to his Facebook page; maybe the divorce/separation provided the impetus for his ex notifying the authorities? (Note: pure, complete speculation. But I'll tell you one thing: that is almost definitely how it will go down in the inevitable Law & Order episode.)

If you did the math, though, there is one matter some find complicating about this case: namely, that the victim was over eighteen when the relationship began and it was (by all reports at the moment) consensual. Many would argue (and I would agree) that ideas of consent get murky when it comes to parents and children, as the power dynamic between the two doesn't magically disappear at the age of eighteen. And while I think most of us would balk at that possibility based off our own experiences, I would say that not every family is the same. Some have waaaay more issues. Clearly.
