Angelina Jolie, one of Hollywood's biggest sex symbols, is set to play Cleopatra, one of history's sexiest leaders. However, Jolie doesn't see it that way and wants to play up Cleo's other great assets in her portrayal. According to Jolie:
"[Cleopatra] has been very misunderstood… I thought it was all about the glamour, but then I read about her and she was a very strong mother, she spoke five languages and she was a leader… My performance will never be as lovely as Elizabeth [Taylor]'s. We are trying to get into a different truth about her as a pharaoh in history and not a sex symbol, because she really wasn't. Even this idea of her having many lovers — it was possible that it was only two. She is very interesting, but she wasn't a great beauty."
I understand her desire to represent the pharaoh as a more three-dimensional figure, though I'm not sure that necessarily has to exclude sex appeal. Great accomplishments and great looks don't have to be mutually exclusive, right? Besides, is it even possible for Jolie to look unsexy? They’d better hire a great makeup artist for that job.
