Anne Hathaway cast as Catwoman in the next “Batman”

The rampant speculation of just who would be the villain (or villains) in Christopher Nolan's third Batman film can finally end: it's been confirmed by Warner Bros. that Anne Hathaway has joined the cast as Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman. Tom Hardy will be appearing as Bane, the super strong body-builder looking man who once broke Batman's back. (He is also dressed like a Mexican wrestler in the comics. You might remember him from George Clooney’s turn as Batman.)

Here's what Nolan had to say in the official statement:

Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.” In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”

Many thought that Hathaway (as well as actresses like Blake Lively and Rachel Weisz) was competing for the role of Talia al Ghul, daughter of Ra's al Ghul, portrayed by Liam Neeson in Nolan's first Batman film. And not to say I called it — because that would be a ridiculous claim and this is probably more of a coincidence than anything — but you can't have a line in The Dark Knight about how Batman's suit could stand up to a large cat and not expect Catwoman to show up eventually.

Of course, Nolan could pull another Harvey Dent on us and keep Kyle as a civilian for most of the film. We'll just have to wait and see. Do you think Hathaway can handle the part?
