After considering almost every big-name actress in Hollywood — including Natalie Portman, Blake Lively, Rebecca Hall, and Amanda Seyfried — Baz Luhrmann has announced that Carey Mulligan, the charming British gamine from An Education and Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, will play the feckless and shallow object of Gatsby's affection. (Gatsby will be played by Leonardo DiCaprio.) Luhrmann released this photo of Mulligan in character during rehearsals:
Of course, Luhrmann isn't 100% committed to the project despite this widespread lead actress search. According to Deadline, the director said:
There are a few elements that I feel need to be resolved before I would categorically state that this is my next film.
So maybe this will never see the light of day, and maybe that's for the best. But I do love Mulligan as an actress, so perhaps this new film version of the American classic will turn out okay.
