Charlize Theron plays a loser returning home in new Jason Reitman/Diablo Cody comedy

Charlize Theron

You may have to suspend all of your disbeliefs, but hey: movies! Theron just signed on to the film where she’ll play a YA fiction writer who returns home to rekindle a relationship with an old high school flame. Upon reconnecting, she learns he’s married and with child, and does not run expectantly into Theron’s downy arms like any right-thinking person. (I hate him already.) Aptly-titled Young Adult, it will be directed by Jason Reitman and written by Diablo Cody, the team behind Juno.

Comparisons are being made on DeadlineHollywood between this movie and Never Been Kissed, but I’ll venture down the quality rabbit hole and say it’s much closer to Just Friends with Ryan Reynolds and Amy Smart. Such a bland premise could use an injection of surprise or horror (horror, in the case of Just Friends, being a Britney Spears facsimile played by Anna Faris), but I have faith in Jason Reitman, though slightly less in Diablo Cody.
