Michael Bay’s next film will be a small-scale character study

…at least relative to, say, Transformers 3, that is. According to MTV (via The AV Club), the explosion auteur is planning to finally make a pet project he's been touting for a while: Pain and Gain, a black comedy, based on a true story, about two bodybuilders who get involved in a kidnapping plot. Bay describes the tone as Pulp Fiction-esque.

What's really startling is that he's planning to make the film for a mere $20 million. By Michael Bay standards, that's, like, a Beckett play. (Transformers 3 cost $195 million.) While the plot sounds like it'll accommodate a fair amount of action, I can't imagine his explosion count will go above a mere ten, and who knows if there'll be room for any paratroopers at all. That means it'll have to have at least a little character work. And Michael Bay isn't exactly known as an actor's director, so it'll be really interesting to see how he fares. Honestly, I'm not writing him off.
