Remember last week when a rumor was swirling around the internet that Gossip Girl's sensitive heartthrob Penn Badgley would be playing singer Jeff Buckley in an upcoming biopic? Then remember when the film's co-producer, Orian Williams, said those rumors were totally, completely untrue and it was in fact Robert Pattinson who might get the part? Well, twist: it was announced today that Badgley would be taking on the role of the late musician. So… what?
Turns out the problem here — which, in hindsight, should have been glaringly obvious given the current nature of Hollywood — is that there are two competing biopics of Buckley in the works. One, which also involves Buckley's mother, is choosing disco-shimmer vampires over moody NYU students. But Greetings from Tim Buckley, which is also about Buckley's father, has actually cast Badgley. Here's a brief synopsis:
Greetings from Tim Buckley follows the true story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s eminent 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Ann’s Church. Through a romance with a young woman working at the concert, he comes to understand the father who abandoned him. Culminating in a cathartic performance of his father’s most famous songs, Jeff’s debut stuns the audience and launches his career as one of the greatest young musicians of his time.
Does Mr. Dan Humphrey himself have the chops to pull this off? He was quite charming in the similarly charming Easy A — and this blogger would add that his cheekbones could cut glass — but playing tortured is a whole other basket of apples.
