Hesher, director Spencer Susser's debut film which premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival, stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a loner/anarchist/stoner with long, stringy hair who forces his way into the life of a grieving family. Rainn Wilson plays a very un-Schrutian widower, Devin Brochu plays his teenage son who befriends Hesher, and Natalie Portman, also playing against type, is a frumpy supermarket cashier who becomes an object of fascination for Brochu's character. The film is a dark comedic, downbeat drama which got mixed reviews after Sundance, but there seems to be consensus that Gordon-Levitt's performance as Hesher, with his pyromania and perverted parables, is outstanding.
