Somewhat sad news: The White Stripes, once hailed as the saviors/future of rock, have finally decided to call it quits. Thought they didn't quite live up to that title — honestly, who could have? — Jack and Meg White still made some truly awesome music in their decade-plus together. Here's the official statement from the band:
The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on any of us and we are truly grateful.
This is not especially surprising, given all of Jack White's recent side projects that seemed more like front projects. (Full disclosure: I already thought this had happened.) Remember how weird they seemed when they first came out, with their Lego videos and that question of whether they were siblings or a divorced couple? (For the record: divorced couple. Interesting fact: Jack took Meg's last name, not the other way around.) Those were simpler times, truly.
So, while it's sad to see them go, the band's not wrong. We'll always have this:
