M.I.A. took to SoundCloud Saturday night to post a track called "27." She later tweeted about the track, noting that, "i recorded this song B4 vickileekx and never put it out. its an unfinished demo." Vicki Leekx is a mixtape M.I.A. put out December 31 of last year that contains heavily re-worked material from her album Maya, released earlier that year.
The lilting, sing-song track certainly sounds unfinished, but it's still a heartfelt tribute, "dedicated to all my friends that died at 27," as M.I.A. wrote on her SoundCloud page. With lyrics like "All rock stars go to heaven," the song is uplifting in an odd sort of way. "R.I.P. Amy," M.I.A. added. Seconded.
