Okay, it may be a pretty weak gauntlet, but unfortunately, this may be the closest we'll ever get to the two divas engaging in fisticuffs. Unless you count Saturday Night Live skits. (Which I don't … because they haven't counted for the past ten years.) It's been a year since "Born This Way" was released and it seems that the Material Girl has spent that time sharpening her claws: in a series of recent interviews, Madonna has shared her none-too-flattering opinion of Lady Gaga, calling Born This Way's title track "a wonderful way to redo" "Express Yourself."
Since Madge is preparing for the release of her newest album, M.D.N.A, she has hit the publicity circuit and is finally breaking her silence over the Gaga comparisons. In an interview with ABC News' "20/20", the pop icon was (at first) fairly complimentary when asked about Lady Gaga. She called Gaga "a very talented artist" but admitted that the comparison between herself and the Mother Monster wasn't far off. "I certainly think she references me a lot in her work," she said, "And sometimes I think it's amusing and flattering and well done." When asked about "Born This Way", Madonna's reply was a little pricklier: "When I heard it on the radio …I said 'that sounds very familiar' …It felt reductive." When asked whether or not that was a good thing, Madge replied, "Look it up."
In an interview with Newsweek, Madonna continued to throw some shade Gaga's way. "I thought, 'this is a wonderful way to redo my song,'" she told the magazine, "I mean, I recognized the chord changes. I thought it was… interesting." Madonna has clearly mastered an eighth-grade mean-girl style of attack: using the word "interesting" after a long pause? The last time I heard a passive-aggressive barb like that I was in the first floor girl's bathroom of North Middle School, spying on Queen Bee Jessy Marshall's lunchtime powwow. (She always smelled like Victoria's Secret Love Spell and wore Limited Too booty shorts — that tells you everything you need to know.)
Watch out, Lady Gaga; if Madonna calls one day and starts goading you into talking about Britney Spears, just bite your tongue. It's the only way to survive a three-way calling attack.
