We previously told you about Croatian cello duo 2CELLOS after they put out a wicked duelling cover of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal," which racked up almost six-million hits on YouTube and landed them a guest performance on Ellen. The boys then went on to tackle a killer version of "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns 'N Roses, which even Axl Rose could love. They're either making the cello cooler… or rock songs less cool, but I prefer the former.
Here, 2CELLOS cover "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, which has already seen renditions by artists ranging from Miley Cyrus and Tori Amos to Metallica. Hauser's headbanging and facial expressions come off as though he's channeling Animal from The Muppets.
2CELLOS are on a roll, professionally. They just began a world tour with Elton John, and released a self-titled covers album last month, featuring the aforementioned songs, as well as tunes by Nine Inch Nails, Coldplay, Kings of Leon, U2, and a breakneck version of Misirlou (Theme from Pulp Fiction.) It's nice to see the expanded possibilities of classical instruments. When we start to hear Slayer covers on the french horn, though, it might be time to worry.
