After years of persecution under Fidel Castro, the tide is turning for Cuban gays and transgendered individuals. Fidel’s niece and the president of the National Sexual Education Center, Mariela Castro, has expressed her commitment to the rights of LGBT Cubans. “I want to live in a socialist society where there is absolute justice,” she said in a recent interview. “So there can’t be discrimination of any kind."

And that absolute justice is taking the form of government-subsidized sex-reassignment surgeries. Cuba has begun to offer sex-change operations free of charge, with financing and medical specialists coming from Belgium. In the months since the change, approximately fifteen transgender patients have received reassignment surgery.
