Hustler sparks controversy with explicit Photoshopped image of conservative pundit

Recently, Hustler magazine ran a Photoshopped image of conservative pundit/New York Daily News columnist S.E. Cupp engaging in fellatio, accompanied by the caption, "What would S.E. Cupp look like with a dick in her mouth?" (The answer, by the way, is "profoundly surprised." Which, when you really think about it, is probably how most of us look in that context; Photoshop or no Photoshop). Unsurprisingly, the photo didn't go over well with both conservatives and left-wing feminists, who are publicly denouncing the magazine and accusing publisher Larry Flynt of sexism. Now, Flynt has responded to these allegations by issuing a statement saying, "Well, duh. Obvs I'm sexist. Does the Pope shit in the woods?" Just kidding. He's actually arguing that the image is "satire," and that Hustler isn't sexist at all.
In a statement to the Daily Beast's Abigail Pesta, Flynt responded to accusations by "the prudish and delusional right wing" that the magazine is "waging a war on women" by running the photo:
That’s absurd. The picture was clearly labeled as satire. It was intended as humorous commentary about her politics. We stated that no such image of Ms. Cupp actually exists. Secondly, the feature, which we run every month, has previously depicted such male luminaries as Mario Cuomo, Dan Rather and, most recently, my friend Bill Maher. How misogynistic or sexist is that?
Flynt defended his right to publish the photo, citing the First Amendment and the 1988 Supreme Court decision Flynt vs. Falwell (Falwell sued Hustler for claiming that the minister had lost his virginity to his mother in an outhouse). He then went on to issue a (totally unsolicited) defense of the practice of oral sex, claiming, "We don't know anything about Ms. Cupp's personal life, but we do know that oral sex is practiced by the majority of adult Americans, both male and female. The fact that the picture of Ms. Cupp has generated so much flap says more about the sexual repression of the American people than it does anything else. Oral sex is a normal and healthy practice."
OK, you guys, we can all rest easy now. Larry Flynt says it's OK for Americans to have oral sex. And if a hard-core pornographer who Woody Harrelson played in a movie once says a sex act is normal and appropriate, then we can probably take his word for it. Free BJs for everyone!
In all seriousness, though, this whole thing is just one big bowl of wrong. It kind of makes you just want to take Larry Flynt and S.E. Cupp aside and say, "Listen, Larry, it's totally not cool to Photoshop dicks in women's mouths, regardless of whether you disagree with their political views; and S.E., it's totally not cool to want to defund Planned Parenthood and just generally be completely terrible. Let's just shake on this, call it a day, and go out for mojitos." But of course, the tone of political discourse in this country doesn't allow for that: there will always be S.E. Cupps saying dumb stuff on TV, and there will always be Larry Flynts to draw penises in their mouths. God bless America, everyone!

Just a question...was it equally wrong when he photoshopped dicks going into Bill Maher, Mario Cuomo, and Dan Rather's mouths? You say "it's totally not cool to photoshop dicks in women's mouths"...which implies that it is ok to do the same thing with men. What's the reasoning there?
There is an important difference between such images based on the gender of the subject. Neither is an appropriate form of criticism. A man receiving a penis in his mouth conveys the idea that he is homosexual and thus something less than a "real man." That is homophobic and wrong. It's the equivalent of shouting "F****t!" at a man you dislike.
Such an image of a woman the author despises, however, implicates the history of sexual subjugation, violence and rape, which is overwhelmingly male-against-female. We know Flynt hates Cupp for her views. The implication of the image is not that she is a liberated woman freely enjoying giving oral pleasure to her male partner, but that she is and should be orally raped to silence her. As bad as the homophobic message of the men's images are, I believe the message of violence is worse.
Remember, it's worse if women get raped than men!
Men and women get raped in equal numbers, so photoshopping a man receiving oral sex with a surprised look with have a connotation of violence for just as many men as it would women.
You're just making a specious excuse for ignoring men who are sexually humiliated in the media.
"Sexualization is silencing." It's telling women to shut up or they will be shut up through sexual means. That's not acceptable. Not for any woman; not on any issue
It's just as hard for a man to talk with a dick in his mouth.
Bluer, no it isn't. No one's trying to silence her anymore than they were trying to silence the various men who have graced that particular feature. Interesting that people don't get up in arms about the men. Once again women have decided they need to be equal, except when they don't want to be.
Hilarious that people are so angry Hustler isn't a progressive "safe space" with trigger warnings and sensitive bullshit.
Drakma, if we lived in a cultural and historical vacuum with absolutely no context, then I would agree with you. But we don't.
I'm amazed that Hustler still exists, or that anyone looks at it.
Same here.
I have no idea who she is, haven't seen the picture, and am plenty liberal and it doesn't sound ok. How's that? Everybody happy now?
Doesn't this constitute a hate crime?
After all he's profiling her based upon her gender.
The Violence Against Women Act of 1994 should be used against him.
I mean, you most certainly DON'T have a constitutional right to threaten
someone with sexual violence.
He wasn't profiling her. He pulled this stunt on more men it seems than women.
"Profiling" is not a requirement. A cogent argument can be made that this act qualifies under the VAWA. The satire exception under the First Amendment - the Constitution protects idiots - would likely protect Flynt though.
I couldn't agree with Larry More. All the hoopla "says more about the sexual repression of the American people than it does anything else." especially considering that hustler stance of the right of both men and women to have photoshopped dicks in their mouths.
Larry Flynt was trolling before there was an internet, and he's not lost his touch.
Flynt never had a touch. He's the kid who farts in the back of the classroom for a laugh. Total loser.
I don't get all the complaining and whining. Are you thinking she has never had a dick in her mouth before? The picture is just a representation of something she has probably done hundreds or thousands of times - like most women.
It's the message behind the pictures in that particular Hustler feature...It seems Larry Flynt often uses images of people he doesn't like or doesn't agree with in this feature and photoshops a dick in their mouths. Whatever the gender of the subject, it's a message that someone should be silenced and humiliated by being forced to perform oral sex on someone. People can explain it away as a satire or pictures of a normal practice all they want...but then why would Larry bother putting it in his magazine, if not for the "humor" of it? If Larry thought that oral sex was a normal and healthy practice, why would he find it titillating/funny enough to put pictures of people doing it every month? His argument contradicts itself.
Totally agree with you, "..."
Yet, here we go again with another non issue. News networks can always anticipate a raitings spike everytime Hustler is implicated in something, which appears to be a weaker attack everytime. How about you keep your nose out of obviously offensive material that your thin skin lacks the ability to comprehend, that way we can better spend our time reading articles that are relevant to life.
I'm shocked, shocked to find Larry Flynt doing something that is sexist.
Five minutes of Photoshop = national media attention. That's why Larry Flynt has a movie and a Surpreme Court case named after him
This is S.E. Cupp we're talking about. Performing fellato would make her a better person.
Women will suck their way to a free dinner, a new car, clothes, jobs and promotions. But, mention it in a magazine and it's a controversy. Ridiculous!
You mean "loose" women will use sex to get ahead in life. But clearly Ms. Cupp is a fine upstanding citizen and Godfearing woman who would only ever have sex in the missionary position with her husband for the purpose of getting pregnant. Because every sperm is sacred. Although it is also low in fat, high in protein, and good for the skin.
"Loose" women give it away for fun. The sort of women YeahRight is complaining about will only suck his dick if there's something to be gained. And who could blame them.
Larry Flynt is a liberal? Who would have guessed??
The story is intended to be funny. In the late seventies Flynt published photos of a woman cramming a snake into her vagina. Not sure his opinion on anything should be taken seriously.
