Marzieh Vafamehr has been sentenced to ninety lashes and one year in jail for her role in the controversial film My Tehran for Sale. Vafamehr plays an Iranian actress whose theater work is banned by the state. She must then live a secret life in order to express herself artistically. So, the premise of the film is pretty much exactly what's happening?

The Iranian government is responding specifically to the fact that the film was not approved for viewing in Iran and, thus, is being distributed illegally. She was also convicted of appearing in a film that casts Iran in a negative light. Vafamehr was arrested in July for her role in the film, but posted bail at that time. Her lawyer has appealed the verdict.
