Following in the footsteps of distinguished thespians Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, Michelle Obama joined the illustrious list of People Who Have Been on the Cover of "People" Magazine To Be Asked to the Marine Corps Ball. According to Politico, 20-year old Marine Lance Corporal Aaron Leeks, who leaves for Afghanistan next month, asked the first lady to the ball after meeting her at a Toys for Tots event, politely adding, "with your husband's permission, of course." The first lady responded, "I'd love to," and sent over an aide to get Leeks's information. Omigod, cue the Capitol Hill version of the "Telephone Hour" number from Bye Bye Birdie, 'cause these two are totally going steady for good!
Although Press Secretary Jay Carney would not confirm whether the first lady would be attending next year's Marine Corps Ball, he did note that "the first lady's commitment to military families is very strong indeed. So I'm sure she was flattered by the invitation." He also told reporters during Friday's briefing that "if the president's watching, this may be the first he's heard of it." Omigod, drama. Cue the Capitol Hill remix of Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney's "The Girl Is Mine." But yeah, all musical theater/VH1 Classic references aside, this is pretty adorable. Have fun, you crazy kids!
