Can you say "Willie Horton" boys and girls? The progressive PAC, American Bridge 21st Century, is back with a new ad, this time using Mitt Romney's own accusation that Newt Gingrich is a career politician against him. And the way the group does this is by flashing back to 1994, the year of Tonya Harding, The Shawshank Redemption getting gypped out of an Oscar, and…O.J. Simpson.
The ad aims to show that Romney isn't quite the Mr. Bain Capital-moneybags-private sector-turnaround-artist-godsend this country has been waiting for. Rather, he's actually been slogging away in electoral politics for the last seventeen years himself, which doesn't exactly make him a political turnip-truck noob. Some out-of-context Friends dialogue is used for its suggestive efficacy, but the inauspicious juxtaposition of Romney with footage of the famous O.J. Simpson Bronco chase is probably the ad's trickiest and most visceral machination.
That's all subliminally damning enough, but how about ending by sowing a little internecine strife within the Republican Party by interpolating footage of a Romney abortion-rights speech? Okay, done. We're just getting started folks, the mud will really be flying back and forth before you know it.
