Indonesian rock star Nazril Ariel receives two year sentence for sex tapes

We last reported that Indonesia's biggest rock star, Nazril "Ariel" Irham was facing five years in prison after his personal computer was stolen from his home and two personal sex tapes were released. Now, the star has been sentenced to a two-and-a-half-year prison term. The videos, one featuring his current girlfriend Luna Maya, were not filmed with the intent to distribute or profit in any way and were obviously released without the star's consent. Nevertheless, the judge cited Irham's lack on contrition as a contributing factor in his stiff sentence.

This is the first time someone has been sentenced under new anti-pornography laws introduced in 2008 under pressure from an Islamist coalition. Even the sentencing was not without controversy, with over 1000 Islamists holding a rally outside the building, pelting Irham's police van with eggs and tomatoes.

What's most interesting, and most sad, about the verdict is the fact that Ariel was not even willfully creating pornography, in the traditional sense. He was creating sex tapes with his willing partners to be shared between them. His prison sentence stands in stark contrast to the fate of American celebrities whose sex tapes are leaked. Here, we tend to give them magazine covers and SNL host spots.
