Watch: Pat Robertson on the end of civilization
By Virginia SmithJune 27th, 2011, 6:30 pmComments (27)You didn't think you'd get through the excitement of gay marriage becoming legal in New York without hearing at least some unhinged backlash from religious groups, did you? No, that would be way too nice. So, reliable crazy Pat Robertson has stepped up to the plate, explaining that this advance in civil rights actually means that the end times are coming for our civilization. There's even talk of angel rape!
In the above clip, Robertson drops the following nuggets of wisdom:
I think we need to remember the term sodomy came from a town known as Sodom and Sodom was destroyed by God Almighty and the thing that they practiced was homosexual activity and even they tried to rape angels who came down there, so that's the kind of people they were. But beyond that, Jesus, when He spoke of Sodom, He didn't say anything about the homosexuality. He talked about just the fact that business was as usual until God decided to destroy it. And He sent an angel down there and He said to Lot and his family, "Get out now, because I'm gonna destroy this whole area." That's where sodomy came from. We use the term sodomy and it means Sodom. What's it like? We're heading that way as a nation. There's never been a civilization ever in history that has embraced homosexuality and turned away from traditional fidelity, traditional marriage, traditional child-rearing, and has survived. There isn't one single civilization that has survived that openly embraced homosexuality. So you say, "What's going to happen to America?" Well, if history is any guide, the same thing's going to happen to us.
Well, there's no arguing against that kind of airtight logic. At least America had a good run while it lasted!

To be fair, he was around for the beginning of civilization, so he might know what he is talking about here....
The last part is my personal favorite considering there are several existing civilizations, albeit tribal civilizations, that not only embrace homosexuality but define their culture around it.
Has anyone stopped to consider what if he is right?????!
Nope.
Pat Robertson is a boob, but that does not change the fact that gay marriage is a joke and it makes a mockery of marriage. You can love your ham sandwich. It does not mean that you should be able to marry it. You can love your sister, but you should not be able to marry her. A polygamist can love dozens of people and want to marry them all. It does not make it normal. This is all just an attempt to "normalize" something that is anything but normal. Talk about a circus of the freaks...
Ooh, a troll!
They're getting more and more common around here
Why would you deny something to people that would make them happy and would not hurt anyone? Why do people like the OP feel so threatened by this?
I remember hen I was taught trolls live under bridges. Now they have relegated to the web.
TROOOOOOOLLLLLL IN THE DUNGEON!
HP reference, always necessary.
Fuck I love trolls.
**when
It is disgusting, but their rights should not be denied based on their sexual preferences. This is my take on it.
We have seen what passes for "traditional ... child-rearing" in the Catholic church, and we are better off without it, frankly.
"No child's behind left."
@Thinkywritey: Bravo!
How can something that doesn't exist destroy something that does exist?
It is always interesting that people use the story of Sodom and Gamorrah as the anti-homosexuality clause in the bible. I guess if that is true then we should ALSO be able to offer up our virgin daughters for gang rape because that is what holy men do (gen 18:9).
So yeah, I guess it is not new that people are picking and choosing what they want to follow out of the bible. I guess the golden rule should really be "Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them (unless you can somehow justify your decision to be a bigot or commit horrible atrocities)."
"There's never been a civilization ever in history that has embraced homosexuality and turned away from traditional fidelity, traditional marriage, traditional child-rearing, and has survived."
Sorry Pat, but no nation has ever made that particular switch.
Even ancient Greece and Rome, insofar as they 'embraced homosexuality', kept traditional marriage and child-rearing intact. Those places collapsed because of wildly expensive military campaigns that bankrupted their respective countries, as well as corrupt politicians more interested in their own accumulation of wealth instead of representing the citizens.
So you see, we don't have anything to worry about.
Best comment I've read on this site in a damn long time.
Pat Robertson has a huge track record of saying the most batshit phrases ever. This is tame compared to some. Like, "Just like what Nazi Germany did to the Jews, so liberal America is now doing to the evangelical Christians. It's no different. It is the same thing. It is happening all over again. It is the Democratic Congress, the liberal-based media and the homosexuals who want to destroy the Christians. Wholesale abuse and discrimination and the worst bigotry directed toward any group in America today. More terrible than anything suffered by any minority in history."
or
"It may be a blessing in disguise. ... Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. Haitians were originally under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon the third, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you will get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it's a deal. Ever since they have been cursed by one thing after the other."
or
"(T)he feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians."
So yeah, it comes to no surprise he says something completely and totally wrong again.
If we all agree Pat Robertson doesn't exist anymore, will he just disappear?
oh yeah, like at the end of merlin, the ol,d mini series with Sam Neil
Pat Robertson may be an extreme practitioner of it, but one of the foundations of any religion is fear -- fear of eternal damnation, fear of bad Karma, fear of direct retribution by a vengeful God, ad infinitum. To the right crowd, it sells well and raises a lot of money. I am not even sure he really believes any of this stuff. He is just a very skilled pitchman at this point. He's not so much God-fearing as going-broke-fearing.
Hallelujah, sir!
Really? Is he being honest? Does he honestly believe his own garbage? I've read this twice, both times I've ended up on the floor laughing. Does anyone take him seriously?
