Eddie Izzard to join “United States of Tara” as a psychology professor

Eddie Izzard — once mostly known for his (hilarious) stand-up routines but increasingly recognized for his acting roles — will join the cast of Showtime's United States of Tara, which stars Toni Collette as the title character, a suburban mom who suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder. Izzard will play a psychology professor who, of course, becomes interested in studying Tara and her multiple personalities.

While I kind of miss Izzard's cross-dressing comedian days, I've liked him in almost every role I've seen him in. (Though I still haven't seen The Riches — are there any readers out there who can give their opinions on the show?) And Tara  seems like a good fit, with its mix of comedy and some very dark undertones; Izzard can certainly pull off a sinister vibe when necessary. (See his turn in Velvet Goldmine, or the time I passed him on the street when he was wearing some intense high-heeled boots and looked like he would cut you if you even looked at him for too long.)

So congratulations, Mr. Izzard. In honor of his new gig, here's a clip of him talking about beekeepers:
