The last decade (roughly since The Sopranos raised the bar) has seen television vastly improve, to the point that arguably more ambitious and interesting work is happening on TV than on film. When you look at shows that were considered premium material in the '90s and before, few (some! but few) stand up to The Wire, Mad Men, etc. So fittingly, TV will soon get an awards show that will (hopefully) be more ambitious and interesting than the Emmys, as the New York-based Paley Center for Media announced that it will broadcast an annual award show starting in 2012. Paley Center panel discussions have appeared on DVD sets of the aforementioned Mad Men and The Wire, and they're usually pretty illuminating. For TV nerds, this is exciting news.
