Earlier this week, we heard about how Fox News can't open up shop in Canada because of a Canadian law that prohibits 'false and misleading news.' Given that our neighbors are legally classifying our major news outlets as bullshit, this shouldn't be that surprising, except that it's Hillary Clinton who's saying it. The U.S. Secretary of State went out on a limb and suggested that the major American news networks are not the apogee of impartial reporting.
Interestingly, she thinks Al Jazeera is pretty great. In a statement that's guaranteed to cause some conservatives to spew out mouthfuls of coffee and take to their blogs in rage. You know, because it's Arab and often critical of American foreign policy. She said:
Al Jazeera has been the leader in that [it is] literally changing people's minds and attitudes. And like it or hate it, it is really effective… In fact viewership of al Jazeera is going up in the United States because it's real news. You may not agree with it, but you feel like you're getting real news around the clock instead of a million commercials and, you know, arguments between talking heads and the kind of stuff that we do on our news which, you know, is not particularly informative to us, let alone foreigners.
I've admittedly never watched Al Jazeera — though it is available in this country. Hillary's praise, coupled with my overall fatigue for mainstream news on both sides of the aisle, might make me start.
