Lisa Edelstein is leaving House and maybe taking the show down with her

Hugh Laurie and Lisa Edelstein in House

Today is an awful day for long-time fans of House, like myself. The best show about an abnormally brainy doctor of all time (Doogie Howser, shmoogie howser) took a huge hit to its cast today as news broke that Lisa Edelstein won't be returning for the eighth and most likely final season. Edelstein, as Dr. Lisa Cuddy, was one of the most important characters on the show from its outset, and her departure will leave a massive hole.

On top of the pain of seeing Cuddy go, there's an added sense that the entire series is doomed. I can just imagine the predictably awkward tug-o-war between House and whoever the new, stricter boss will be, and I'm not excited.

On the upshot, at least, Edelstein helped Olivia Wilde bring some much needed feminine sex appeal and spunk to a largely dry, male cast. Now, unfortunately, House and I have to find someone to new to pine over.
