MSNBC suspends Ed Schultz for calling Laura Ingraham a slut

Liberal commentator Ed Schultz, one of television news' lesser-known controversial figures, is in a bit of hot water over some inappropriate comments he made on his radio show last Tuesday. After Schultz called conservative radio host Laura Ingraham a "right-wing slut," MSNBC has suspended him without pay for one week. According to a statement by the network, "remarks of this nature are unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

While the word "slut" has many connotations and has even tried to be reclaimed in a positive way by some feminists, it is still largely carries a sexually shameful stigma. Regardless of anyone's politics, derogatory remarks of this nature are out of bounds. Go after Ingraham's political arguments all you want. Pick them apart and attack them fiercely (really, it's not that hard) but let's leave sexuality out of it.
