New Starz series to follow young, sexy Leonardo da Vinci

Are we actually doing this? Yes, I guess we are actually doing this: Starz has picked up the proposed series Da Vinci's Demons, which will follow a twenty-something version of the renowned genius as he paints and theorizes and screws his way through the Italian Renaissance. (Dollars to doughnuts one of those gets far more screen time than the others. My guess: it will be the one with all the fucking.) Penned by David S. Goyer, co-writer of both The Dark Knight and the upcoming Man of Steel, the show will find a natural home on a network that knows a thing or two about sexing up history.

“Da Vinci was the original Renaissance man — a near-mythic figure that has world-wide appeal,” Goyer said. “This will be a show about secret histories, genius, madness, and all things profane. And I’m particularly excited that I get to do it on premium cable, where the story can be as dark and challenging and irreverent as it deserves to be.”

You know when you watch a movie or TV show and a character is meant to be a great artist, maybe a poet or painter or songwriter, and you just keep praying you never get to actually see an example of their work on screen? Because in the end whatever you get will be limited by the talent of the writers and designers working on the show, and it's almost always painful to see what gets passed off as genius-level talent on, say, a second-rate teen drama? I think this show will feel a lot like those moments, but it will be constant and unrelenting and every time fake Leonardo opens his mouth it will be like watching The Last Supper torn ever so slowly in two.

Can't wait to see how they handle that charge of sodomy with a male prostitute, though.
