Paula Deen

Notoriously butter-centric Food Network star Paula Deen is reportedly being treated for Type 2 diabetes, and plans to go public with the news by endorsing the medication she has been using for the disease.

The story was first reported by the National Enquirer in April, and is now being reported by The Daily. The news will pose an awkward conundrum for Deen, given that her stock and trade is the kind of artery-clogging Southern cuisine that led Anthony Bourdain to slam her as "the worst, most dangerous person to America […] telling an already obese nation that it is okay to eat food that is killing us."

One source told The Daily, "Paula Deen is going to have to reposition herself now that she has diabetes. She's going to have to start cooking healthier recipes. She can't keep pushing mac and cheese and deep-fried Twinkies when she is hawking a diabetes drug."

So yeah, besides the obvious health concerns and lifestyle changes that come with diabetes, it looks like a pretty major re-branding is about to take place. Besides her partnership with Novartis, the drug company she'll be promoting, it's a pretty safe bet that "light" versions of all her usual recipes will be coming our way soon.

For those of us who still harbor an attachment to heavy cream, we'll always have The Barefoot Contessa.
