Portia de Rossi to change name to Portia DeGeneres
By Lindsay CutlerAugust 11th, 2010, 11:45 amComments (7)
After the verdict to overturn Prop-8 in California, Portia de Rossi jumped on the opportunity to finally change her last name to DeGeneres, which she filed for back in March. The hearing to adopt the last name of Rossi's wife is set for September 10th, which we're all super excited for, and will pull out our hair if somehow Prop 8 is reinstated in that time. (It won't right? And even if it is, I don't think her name can retroactively change back.)
This will be Rossi's second name change; her first was when she changed her name from the oh-so-provincial Amanda Lee Rogers. (Kidding, it's a perfectly fine name.)
Best of luck to the couple in their September hearing!

I wish they had both changed their names to Ellen/Porta de Degeneres. (And Prop 8 still has a decent chance of getting reinstated. Odds are with the good guys, though.)
I'm glad that this is something this couple and all gay couples can do, but then again, I'm left to wonder how couples that aren't heteronormative choose which last name to use and whether using another's last name is antiquated. I'm at this weird place where I know gay couples should have traditional rights, but also think that we all need to examine why these are our traditions and whether we want them.
I think it's up to each gay couple. Traditionally, the woman taking the man's names was kind of a sign of ownership, but it is nice for everybody in a family to have the same last name. Really, who cares why we have traditions if they make us happy and no one's getting hurt?
I think the name change is way overdue. But I liked her original name better than her stage name.
why don't they both change their names do De Generossi?
DiRossi is an assumed name anyways.
" why don't they both change their names do De Generossi?" Because then they would be hounded by suicidal tabloid photographers... De Generossi kamikazi papparazzi.
