George R.R. Martin's enormous fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire has attracted a cult following and critical acclaim for a reason. While most fantasy series are set in medieval Europe, dragons and half-human races notwithstanding (and A Song of Ice and Fire is no exception), Martin doesn't hit you over the head with it. It's exists within the framework of the story, but it isn't the story. Martin's books examine the age-old institutions of power, war, corruption and civil strife. It's also pretty bloody and sexy.

Perfect material for HBO, right? They're working on A Game of Thrones - the first seven books of the series. Shooting began in Belfast this July, and there's no word yet when it might premiere. But it has Sean Bean and Peter Dinklage. Get excited.

I've been following the series for about 8 years (unfortunately only one book has been written over that period.. and he's still got 3 more to go). I've got my brother, my parents, my boyfriend, and several other people addicted in that time. It really is a cut above. Even if you don't like fantasy, you may very well find yourself liking it.

Big fan. I always thought this book series would do great as a tv series. So many plot twists and betrayals, it's practically a sword n sorcery soap opera.

This has been in production forever. Never a good sign. I really hope we can see it soon.

I hope it's not butchered like the Sword of Truth - Legend of the Seeker books were by TV. At least it's HBO, and they have a fantastic track record of being on the cutting edge and spending money when it's needed.

Cookiepuss - this has been in production 'forever' because they are actually filming it. Did you even watch the video? It looks like HBO wants to do it right. G Unit - I totally agree. The Sword of Truth series was a huge disappointment; it's like watching Xena. I don't know why they would deviate from the fantastic story to make up lame crap.
