Because Stephen Colbert couldn't "convey the epic genius of this verbal spanking," John Lithgow came to the rescue and delivered a marvelous dramatic reading of the absurd press release recently issued by Newt Gingrich. We all knew the Tony and Emmy winning actor was good — he's played a bumbling alien and cold-hearted serial killer with equal conviction after all — but the passion he displays here on last night's episode of The Colbert Report is nothing short of miraculous.

Though to be fair Newt's spokespeople probably did most of the work with their borderline parodic takedown of the media. Any statement that begins, "The literati sent out their minions to do their bidding," practically begs to be read with a dramatic heft usually reserved for Shakespeare.

That was wonderful. John Lithgow is wonderful. Stephen Colbert is wonderful. Newt Gingrich is a putz.
