Alec Baldwin may not be running for political office, but he's certainly making his opinions felt on Twitter, even after threatening to go cold turkey from the service following that Words With Friends incident on an American Airlines flight last December. Over the weekend, Baldwin took a shot at Oklahoma Republican Senator James Inhofe, a strong ally of oil-and-gas producers, tweeting to his 700,000+ followers, "Is there a bigger Oil Whore alive than James Inhofe?"

Continuing with his rant, Baldwin wrote, "Oil Whore Jim Inhofe has betrayed every man and woman who lost their livelihood on the Gulf due to BP's overwhelming negligence." What prompted Baldwin's bile is unclear, but he later publicly-messaged the environmentally-conscious Matthew Modine and another person that "We need to have Inhofe retire to a solar-powered gay bar."

Perhaps he's jealous of all the love George Clooney's getting for his work in the Sudan, but one thing's clear: the Inhofe organization wasn't pleased. Addressing reporters in a Monday email, a spokesman stated:

"These kind of outrageous statements made recently on Twitter by Robert Kennedy Jr. and Alec Baldwin stand in stark contrast to the civil debate Sen. Inhofe had with Rachel Maddow last week. In truth, the far left and Hollywood elites have lost on their pet cause of global warming. The only way to get attention these days is to make outlandish and irresponsible comments on Twitter."

A couple weeks ago, responding to Inhofe's questioning of the EPA over President Obama's fuel economy and air-pollution policies, Kennedy had tweeted, "Speaking of prostitutes, big oil's top call girl Sen Inhofe wants to kill fuel economy backed by automakers, small biz, enviros, & consumers."

On Sunday, Baldwin felt compelled to make a semantical point, tweeting at the Twitter accounts of Inhofe and Rush Limbaugh, "But Fluke isn't a slut and Inhofe is an Oil Whore. Y'see?"

Besides engaging in Twitter feuds, the 30 Rock star has also been burnishing his activist credentials, teaming up with PETA to raise awareness of elephant mistreatment in circuses. Whether he truly believes in these causes, or is still making penance for that voicemail he left his daughter, the positive result is the same. Unless you happen to be an oil whore just trying to make his way in the world.

At least I can use oil. It's impossible to run my car off the attention that Baldwin whores himself out for.

Everyone loves to demonize Big Oil, but yet we cannot live without it. Even if you don't drive a car, oil and petroleum products are literally everywhere. (Think about every single thing you own or use that is made of plastic.)

So, while we absolutely require oil we'd better do everything we can to get it. Because without it we fail, plain and simple.

I don't think anyone's talking about abolishing oil, it's about encouraging innovation (read: creating jobs) and conserving a finite resource by introducing more efficient technology, not to mention keeping our air clean. Look at China if you aren't aware of what happens when air pollution regulations are non-existent, substandard or poorly enforced.

Sen. Inhofe opposes these things for no clear reason other than to line to pockets of oil companies. The ones that have been raking in record annual profits for nearly their entire existence.

What's wrong with profit? If you owned a business you'd certainly be in favor of it.

And how does Sen Inhofe "oppos[ing] these things" prevent people from innovating? And please don't tell me that only government will fund such things, blah, blah, blah, Henry Ford didn't need government funding nor did Thomas Edison. It's really not about encouraging innovation, it's about buying votes with taxpayer money (read: corruption).

Interesting you'd mention China: Obama frequently cites it as an example of a greening economy.
