It seems that Facebook's hush-hush Project Titan is a secret no more: sources have revealed that Titan is actually a web-based email client, unofficially being referred to internally as Facebook's "Gmail killer." And while Titan may only be in its larval stage come Monday's launch, Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, and Hotmail may soon be quaking in their virtual boots.
An attractive email platform from Zuckerbergville could lure in lucrative ad impressions from the other Big Four, further empowering the Facebook juggernaut. The abandoning of AOL Mail by users in recent years has led to that company's financial collapse, while Yahoo Mail has begun to see similar erosion. Most of those defectors have made their way to Gmail.
Let's just hope logging onto this new email doesn't entail feeding any virtual farm animals.
