Man dies while attempting "planking" meme

planking

Sad news: a man in Australia died this weekend in what authorities believe was an attempt at "planking," a new meme in which people post pictures of themselves online lying flat and face down in unexpected situations. The man reportedly fell to his death on Sunday from a seventh-floor balcony in Brisbane.

Not too surprisingly, authorities are now warning against the potential dangers of planking, and a statement from Australian police said, "The potential for disaster increases as more and more risks are taken to get the ultimate photo." Dramatically worded, but I'm inclined to agree. Plus, the world could probably stand to be at least a little less committed to memes.

Hm. This makes my flippancy about planking the other day seem less than appropriate. Please don't die while planking, everyone.

Did he land face down? If so, best planking ever and extra points for committment.

Someone explain to me why this planking thing is funny and popular? I really can't wrap my mind around it.

I'm sure some of his fellow countrymen referred to his failure as due to his being 'a right planker'.
