While biopics may be my least favorite genre, as they so rarely stray from a screenwriting formula straight out of a Syd Field how-to book, this one has definitely got me excited. Warmly received at Cannes and wisely shot in classic black and white, befitting the mood of both Joy Division's music and doomed singer Ian Curtis' life, this looks like it might be a remedy for the rash of celebrity reenactments we've been burdened with over the last several years. The fact that Samantha Morton is the only recognizable face in the trailer seems to bode well for the film's retaining a feeling of authenticity, but using an unknown cast generally proves costly at the box office. Still, with threads of Joy Division's influence to be heard throughout much popular music made today, perhaps most notably in the sounds of bands like Interpol and The National, those curious about the band and its tragic backstory may be enough to give this film theatrical life. — Bryan Whitefield
