Physique
by Matthias Vriens
As editor of
Dutch
in the mid-'90s, Matthias Vriens filled the fashion pages with male models who looked like they'd worked more streetcorners than runways. ("The dirty-feet type," one critic called them.) As an artist, he exhibited portraits of male hustlers that he drew on hotel stationery. Who better, then, to rattle the stylistic cage of male nude photography? In this series, Vriens uses black and Latino models — some of them recruited from the neighborhood around his Harlem gallery — to riff on the physique magazines of the '40s and '50s.
