Field of Dreams
by Chloe Aftel
Chloe Aftel is quite the prodigy. Self-taught, not yet thirty, and already much honored, she says that “not going to photography school was one of the best things I ever did. It allowed me to experiment and fail and learn in ways that would have been discouraged.”
Take this gallery for example: if I told you that the pictures were of a beautiful naked woman in a Marin County beach and pasture, often double exposed with flowers over her privates, you’d expect the schlockiest of femininity clichés. But no, look at the images (which she does in camera, not in post-production), and you’ll see the care and talent involved in creating these lush composites. To make them come out well, as she says, “there’s a little luck, but there’s also a lot of really paying attention.”
