i'm an italian catholic and a member of the site www.geocities.com/mamunda which try to improve art and peace on earth. When i looked at the opus of cox i tried a deep sense of emotion, almost a shock. I think this could be the definition of art of God and of love, that is a transport to another world of sensations. I ask to whoever to close the eye of world business and to open the artistic and spiritual one.

I am inspired to (1) Stay in college, so I can (2) Get a job that will pay enough, so I can (3) By a 9' x 6' reprint of "Yo Mama" to put on my living room wall, so my future children can (4) look at it, and dig on a visual paradigm of a strong black woman. Her legs ground her, her shoulders, arms, and torso are ready to defend her, and the baby, and her eyes permit nothing but the vulnerable honesty of love. O.k. and I do have a little crush on her. But this THE WOMAN I would want my daughter to see ME have a crush on. Get it?

These ranged from "eh" to repulsive. It's not the black models or the religeous involvement, either. Ok, the last supper pic did make me chuckle... never seen anyone use that as an inspiration.

Why is it controversial for a black artist to uses religious imagery? Cause white supremacy dictates that those are icons that cannot be critiqued by black artists. We have a right to use and express what ever we want and show in museums and galleries! Thank you so much Ms. Cox for doing and saying what is rightfully yours to express, especially raising questions like why are religious images less sacred when the madonna or jesus is a black woman. If you do ever read this I would love to find out when your next show is and do you give talks in nyc. helenanton@earthlink.net

Look who is upset over these wonderful depictions of the last days of Christ on earth they are all most all men. They do not like the idea of a woman in a position traditionally saved for a Caucasian male. These people would also be very upset at the thought that after Christ raises form the dead he is neither male nor female black nor white. Your portraits help to keep my mind in the correct place against this white dominated society that almost forces you to say "whites are the superiors" i do not believe this but if you hear it every day you must have a strong will to resist this lie. Thank you so much for making me think about what has happened to this land of "equal opportunity" when a black women gets hammered for doing the exact same thing that a white male has done 300 years before. i just want to know one thing about the people that oppose these paintings is it the fact that she is black or that she is a women?

I personally don't see what all the hipe is about. A Women is sacred and beautiful. To the native people of this U.S.A.
women are concidered the backbone of this natiion and are the life givers. To Renee Cox I say stay strong and hold your ground, keep expressing your visions they're Beautiful and never let whoever disagrees with them destroy them because they're sacred and have power. Power enough to get a reaction. Just remember Freedom of Expression is what this country's all about. I heard your message all the way
over here on the Navajo Nation in Arizona. Hozho Na Naah
