I was increduluous many years ago overhearing a Whitney Museum curator say that a self portrait photograph of Robert Mapplethorp sticking a whip up his butt was similar and as great as other famous artist self portraits (and she mentioned among others Van Gogh), I was again incredulous when I saw a photo show at Cheim & Reid last year in New York City of polaroids that Mapplethrop did of himself masturbating, and I am so weary and bored that we continue to see his style continue to be imitated by talentless people like Janine Gordon. Even the shock value of a close-up of a man holding his pecker has disappeared, and we are left with the thought that the photographer hastried to hide her lack of talent behind the man's cock. Boring.
I thought that most of the pictures were
silly. The chains are obviously plastic which
totally took away the feeling of bondage. The
Models for the most part are "beautiful" people.
Perfectly sculpted bodies. The photo of the girls
just looked ghetto to me. The make-up on the
blonde, as well as the cheap couch. And as
another person commented - "no chemistry". I
enjoyed seeing the males as objects as far too
often women are, but the black male in chains
did strike up a whole other issue. The photos
I did enjoy were the ones that weren't so
blatenly staged and obvious, such as the photo
were the males face is not seen because of the
position of his head and the center of the photo
on his chest. I also liked the photo with the
males back to us with his hands behind his back-
a very nice curve of his back from the top of
the frame down to the bottom. Another nice one
was the out of focus male turning sideways. These
are less obvious and in your face bondage which
leaves the imagination to the viewer.
I love anything bondage, and prefer a less sexual bondage pic, than an overtly sexual picture. I loved every picture in this group, though the last one is a bit far fetched.
Overall, god job.
Some of the compistion and lighting was done well, but the models don't seem as though they're really getting into the feeling of the shot that they are modeling for.
Not great. As someone commented below, thanks for shooting "nonmodel" bodies--I think they're hotter than those we're used to seeing naked. But the bondage--oh, please. Clunky, uncomfortable, and about as erotic as a stack of newspapers.
I like the idea of reversing the gender code whereby it is the woman photographer eroticizing her male subject-object, however, I am not so sure about the bondage. It is not that visually erotic, more erect penises is really what i am looking for. Also, to consider the subjection of all men to bondage as subversive, would be excluding the history of racial oppression.
I found these models very posed and a little cliche. A black man in chains? The two women, back to back in handcuffs, are staring at the camera, there's no chemistry. Seen it in a cheap porno mag, yawnnnnnn
I really enjoyed it and I especially liked that it was a women doing it to men instead of the reverse. Nice shots although sometimes a bit contrived. Composition is nice and I liked that the models were everyday people and not "beautiful people."
