Yes, I find this time and time again , and it's one of the best photojournalist sets yet...I'm a pretty straight women, but I can't help but be jealous! That or I wish my pic was there!

I was really disapointed. The Photo's, and the commentary were very good. But the Lie really cheapened it for me. For the most part people read journals, and the like to feel as if they have had some little sneak into the privacy of a persons past. It would have been better with pictures of your real girlfriends regardless of how ugly they may have been. Beauty can be found anywhere, it just depends how deep your willing to dig for it. Using models just goes to show you how lazy you are.
People like to go on and on about "honesty" in art, often without having a clear handle on the concept and its place in an artistic context. If you're talking about dishonest art, you're talking about advertising or propaganda, not a project like Helfrich's. This is a funny, ironic, stylized body of work--very clever and very obviously not meant to be taken literally.
How "ironic"!! I thought I was about to enjoy some thoughtful art, yet instead found myself transported to a "National Lampoon" spread...from the years it really sucked.
Nerve still publishes these pictures even though the concept is a fraud and the photographer a liar. Great work. Who says crime doesn't pay when people like you are willing to promote dishonest work.
Kick Ass, Mark! Tha pics of hot lookin models followed by amusin comments for each and everyone of them...very creative I mus say. Not only are tha comments of each photo funny, but written briefly with a eye pleasin font(sorta/kinda grafitti-ish).

realy thisis a joke you've got't all rong this collection has nothing to do with nude photography
its an art and x girlfrind isue is realy much more porn than any kind of photography
cause pics are not photos !!!
My mistake : I found the commentary on "Cindi" dryly humerous : reminiscent in fact of Hunter S Thompson ; it was the text on "Gina" that strayed for me...
And one more thing : having read the other comments on this work by Helfrich, I suggest the majority of you seek out a library, find a dictionary, and look up the word "irony".
Your stunning lack of awareness is almost disturbing... almost.
And yeah, that's right, I'm a European.
A little bemused though that anyone took it at face value... then again, it does seem to be a truism that you Americans ain't exactly renowned for your sense of irony...
Sweet sentimental photography, witty commentary and faux male confessional : the only comment I found a a little tasteless regarded "Cindi" : the text appeared a little too reactionary ; but as a whole I think, one for all lovers.
Are these posed pictures of models together with adolescent fantasies of what some guy wishes his life had been like supposed to be entertaining. Or artistic. Please. Like any one of us couldn't hire a bunch of models and create a fictional past life that made us sound urbane and sexually sophisticated or whatever.
i tought your thing was very good i like it very much it all most putme in mind of a song called 88 lines about 44 weman i fore get who sings it but it was good thank you fore sherying it with me
Looking at these, its hard to believe that people thought they were all real. I like the concept, but look at anyone's photos from the 70s, naked or clothed, and you can tell the difference.
If I understand this correctly, most of the pictures in the book are not of his real ex-girlfriends but of modern day models "recreating" poses and images from his younger years. Ahem, ahem, I don't know what others think but I think this guy is a bum.
Now don't get me wrong, it's just that as a guy, the only time you should brag about the women in your life is when they are as hot as most seem in the pictures. AND if you're telling tall-tales then be sure you don't get caught or else you look like a loser. So at first, having seen what looks like real hot babes, I couldn't help but feel that this guy was a stud. Now, having the truth been uncovered, the whole book seems pathetic. Something tells me this guys' gals where for the most part fatish and hairy. Then again it WAS the 70's.
cool!
when this book came out, It caused a
great deal of comotion in my social
circle. The fact that the subjects are
a lot closer to everyday plain janes
than playmate centerfolds all of a sudden
made all the women arround me angry
when they either
1) thought about and visualized
the possibility of exposing that either they
have done something so wild and ruining that
beautiful angel fascade, or
2) that they had done nothing to ruin it with.
thanks for all the commotion and exposure
cool!!
I enjoyed the Nerve picture gallery so much I bought the book. When it arrived it took me right back to 1972. My age and experiences (and, perhaps, taste in women) were so similar to Mark's that the book took me on a major nostalgia trip. I found Mark's recollections to be, in the whole, as hauntingly sweet as my own memories. Thanks to Mark and his ex-girlfriends for a very intimate look back to a very special time.
Agreed that the largest naked picture in the book is that of the author. Unfortunately, the portrayal is rather unflattering. He never talks about the women as other than sexual objects. Given that he is spanning a decade, you might think he would have experienced at least one partner on an other than genital plane. The book is fine if all you want is titilation, but it does not reach out to the romance of the 70's.
YOUR PHOTO DIARY IS EXCELLENT! INITIALLY I JUST LOOKED AT THE PICTURES AS THEY WERE POSTED DAILY, BUT IT WASN'T UNTILL NOW THAT I HAVE READ YOUR COMMENTS AND THINK EVEN MORE OF YOUR WORK AND YOUR HONESTY. YOU'VE IMPRINTED THEIR PHYSICAL IMAGE IN MY EYES AND SCRIBBLED THEIR CHARACTER IN MY MIND.
Thank you, and thank you to your friends. May your future be as much fun as your past!
I must ask. A few days back, there was a gallery of photos by a guy with an Asian name which I cannot recall. His little essay included a quote to the effect of, "I don't press them into this attitude, they just get comforatble and start, and i say, 'Great...'" They were all variously involved in self-pleasuring.
Ant idea who that was? I can't find it again.

I love it, simple beautiful and sexy all at the same time. I do believe that your simple photos told tales of what was.
These photos were fun, especially with the little essays that accompanied them. They were real, yet simple, not pornographic in nature.
Fascinating.

that was fabulous. loved the stories that accompanied each picture

Hello,
Does Mr. Helfrich have an email address to which I may post a question?
Thanks,
