The Pitts Perspective
by George Pitts
I can no longer count the number of George Pitts galleries on Nerve on my toes – and that is a fabulous thing. From the early days of this website, we sought to publish nude photography that dodged the clichés of porn and erotica, that made you not only feel but think, that elicited as much intrigue and provocation as arousal. Pitts' work is in many ways the archetype, and we're thrilled that he's been along for our now twelve-year ride.
In this gallery as in virtually all the others, Pitts shoots a range of unexpected subjects. This time there's a naked pregnant woman in heels arching her back on a bed and another in an Elizabethan collar of newspaper; other galleries have featured a transsexual, pre- and post-op, or a woman with her head in a plastic bag.
But challenging as these images can be, they aren't in-your-face. Somehow a gentleness pervades even the most graphic of shots, and knowing George a little explains why. His demeanor is so calm and soothing, he creates an enormous comfort in his models that carries over to the work. And then, it's as if even the most daring of poses are simply inevitable in art's organic expression of itself, as if beauty was just waiting patiently to get on all fours, spread its legs, or place its head in newspaper plastic.
Looking at these images, I think: yes, that piece was missing from what I've known of the world — that had to be. Certain art distinguishes itself by giving us a new way of seeing or hearing; one of the great triumphs of Pitts' work is to make palpable its own necessity.
