Dark Lady
by Shanna Ravindra
In the suspense film
Sudden Fear
, Joan Crawford plays a playwright whose actor-husband (played by Jack Palance) may or may not be planning her murder. The camera practically zooms
into
her wide-open eyes as she is repeatedly struck with
sudden! fear!
, but she plays the staying-alive game brilliantly. We would have tripped on the train tracks and been dead ten minutes into the movie, but she proves a worthy adversary to her would-be killer.
Photographer Shanna Ravindra, a recent School of Visual Arts graduate, captures the noir heroine's elegant calm-under-pressure with flair. Anxiety about one's husband, one's future, one's possibly imminent violent death - it's nothing that can't be combated by a silk scarf, a cigarette and a good pair of sunglasses. —
