Intent on breaking down the boundaries of sexual politics with his photography, Roy Stuart ventures into the ambivalent relationship between reality and illusion, using role-play to parody and challenge conventional ideas of sex. Full of rich colors, dramatic lighting, and cinematic story lines, the photographer's images have a filmic quality — many of his pictures were actually taken on the sets of his films or videos, which explains why they feel cinematic — but illusion mingles with a frank sense of reality here.
